Zelenskiy Highlights Global War Risk While Seeking Western Support, Reports Reuters
Zelenskiy Warns of Potential World War Three Amid Calls for Support
BERLIN (Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy highlighted the risks of the ongoing Ukraine conflict escalating into World War Three during an interview with German state broadcaster ARD on Sunday. He called on countries, ranging from Germany to the United States, to increase their support for Ukraine.
Zelenskiy stated, "It seems to me that the Chancellor (Olaf Scholz) is aware of this risk," emphasizing that if Russia were to strike a NATO member, it could signal "the beginning of the Third World War."
When asked about his disappointment regarding Germany’s decision not to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, Zelenskiy expressed frustration that Germany had not assumed "the role it should have played in the initial occupation of Ukraine." He suggested that the West’s inadequate response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 paved the way for the invasion in February 2022, noting that this issue extended beyond just Germany.
"It’s not just about Olaf Scholz," he remarked. "It concerns European leaders and the U.S."
Zelenskiy also addressed the political landscape in the U.S., where he claimed that support for Ukraine spans across party lines. "There are individual Republicans who do not support Ukraine, but the vast majority of Democrats and Republicans support Ukraine," he pointed out.
In terms of a potential second term for Donald Trump and its implications for U.S. support, Zelenskiy asserted that American policy should not hinge on any single individual.
