NATO Announces December Summit in London, Reports Reuters
BRUSSELS – NATO leaders are set to convene for a summit in December in London, as announced by Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the military alliance.
The decision to hold the summit in London carries significant meaning, particularly as Britain approaches its exit from the European Union next month, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a vital role in European security.
At the previous NATO summit, held at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels in July, U.S. President Donald Trump’s demands for increased defense spending unsettled several European allies, including Germany. He urged them to reduce their reliance on Russian energy.
Stoltenberg expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom for hosting this meeting during NATO’s 70th anniversary year. He noted that London was the original site of NATO’s first headquarters and praised the UK as one of the alliance’s twelve founding members, highlighting its continued contributions to collective security.
The upcoming London summit will provide a platform to discuss current and future security challenges and to ensure that NATO remains adaptive to protect its population of nearly one billion people.
