DirecTV Claims Warner Bros Discovery’s CNN Streaming Breaches Agreement
DirecTV, a satellite television provider, has raised concerns with Warner Bros Discovery regarding its new streaming service for CNN, suggesting that the move may breach an existing contract between the two companies, according to a report by the New York Times.
Warner Bros Discovery recently launched CNN Max in the United States, aiming to enhance declining ratings and connect with a younger demographic. The company is focused on increasing viewer engagement with its streaming platform.
DirecTV, which also carries CNN’s traditional cable broadcasts, expressed worries that many programs airing on CNN’s cable channel are also available on CNN Max, as stated in correspondence with Warner Bros Discovery executives.
This situation follows a recent dispute between Disney and Charter Communications, which resulted in several channels, including ESPN, going dark on Charter’s service. That conflict was resolved last month.
DirecTV had not responded to requests for comment, while Warner Bros Discovery opted not to address the specifics of the report, asserting that their partners comprehend the reasoning behind the Max service, which is designed to attract new viewers.
