WASHINGTON – Lael Brainard, a senior economic adviser at the White House, is set to present the Biden administration’s strategy on Monday to protect the U.S. auto industry from what it views as unfair trade practices by China.
In her remarks at the Detroit Economic Club, Brainard will point out, "China is flooding global markets with a wave of auto exports at a time when they are experiencing overcapacity. We have seen this playbook before in the China shock of the early 2000s that negatively impacted our manufacturing communities."
She will emphasize that the administration is committed to preventing another China shock by establishing safeguards to ensure that a sudden influx of low-priced Chinese automobiles does not undermine the competitiveness of the U.S. auto sector on the global stage.
