One in Four Black Men Under 50 in the U.S. Support Trump for President, NAACP Poll Reveals
By Stephanie Kelly
In a recent NAACP poll, it was revealed that more than a quarter of younger Black men indicated that they would support Republican candidate Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Historically, Black voters have been a steadfast Democratic demographic. However, during President Joe Biden’s administration, some younger Black voters, as well as Black men across various age groups, have grown disillusioned with the Democratic Party. These voters played a crucial role in Biden’s 2020 election victory, and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is now working to regain their support in anticipation of the election on November 5.
According to the new NAACP survey, which polled 1,000 registered Black voters nationwide between August 6 and August 12, 63% plan to support Harris, while only 13% favor Trump. Notably, among Black men under 50, 26% expressed support for Trump, compared to 49% who backed Harris. In contrast, 77% of Black men over 50 indicated they support Harris. Furthermore, 67% of Black women reported supporting Harris, while 8% backed Trump.
The poll identified key concerns among Black voters, highlighting the economy, crime, and public safety as top issues. Economic stressors such as the cost of food, housing, and utilities were particularly emphasized. Eighty-two percent of Black men under 50 ranked economic issues among their top concerns, while 75% of Black women across all ages agreed.
Additionally, the survey found that messaging focused on the perceived threats to rights has the greatest potential to motivate undecided voters, especially among younger Black men.
