Protests Erupt in Karachi Over Hezbollah Leader’s Death
KARACHI – Demonstrators in Pakistan’s southern city of Karachi clashed with police on Sunday during protests against Israel’s killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
The crowd, numbering around 3,000 and organized by the pro-Iran Shi’ite political party Majlis Wahadatul Muslimeen, voiced their anger with chants of "Death to America" while displaying posters of Nasrallah.
Police reported that seven officers sustained injuries from stones thrown by the protesters and required hospital treatment. According to Police Deputy Inspector General Asad Raza, law enforcement had to employ baton charges and tear gas to disperse those who attempted to breach police cordons established in coordination with protest organizers.
Raza indicated that criminal charges would be filed against individuals who engaged in violent behavior during the demonstration.
The unrest followed the airstrike in Beirut that resulted in Nasrallah’s death on Friday, prompting Hezbollah to respond with intensified rocket fire aimed at Israel and a vow from Iran to seek retribution.
