Pennsylvania Governor States Opposition to Nippon-US Steel Merger, According to Reuters
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced on Tuesday that he is unable to support Nippon Steel’s proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel in its current state, primarily due to dissatisfaction among the United Steelworkers union regarding the merger.
As a potential candidate for Vice President Kamala Harris’ Democratic Party running mate in the upcoming November presidential election, Shapiro expressed that his perspective on the merger is heavily influenced by its implications for workers.
“From my position as governor, if the U.S. steel workers are unhappy with this deal, which they are, then I am also not in favor of it,” Shapiro stated during an event hosted by the Internal Revenue Service that was attended by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
He further noted, “If I cannot envision a future where U.S. Steel manufacturing not only remains but also expands in Pennsylvania, then I have significant concerns about this situation.”
