Reactions to the Death of Chilean Ex-President Piñera in Helicopter Crash – Reuters

Chilean former President Sebastian Pinera, who served two non-consecutive terms from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2018 to 2022, tragically passed away in a helicopter crash on Tuesday in southern Chile. His body has been recovered, and a state funeral is scheduled for Friday.

In response to his passing, various individuals and leaders have shared their condolences:

Former President Pinera’s Office
"Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. We appreciate the immense outpouring of support we have received during these difficult times."

Chilean President Gabriel Boric
"He was a democrat from the very beginning and truly aimed for what he believed to be the best for the country. This was evident when he led the reconstruction efforts following the earthquake on February 27, 2010, the audacious rescue of the 33 miners from the San Jose mine, and in his management of the pandemic more recently."

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
"I am shocked and saddened by the news of Sebastian Pinera’s passing. We collaborated closely to bolster the relationship between our nations, enjoying constructive dialogue both during and outside of our presidencies. It’s a deep loss, and my condolences go to his family and friends."

Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri
"I feel immense sorrow at the loss of my dear friend Sebastian Pinera. He was genuinely committed to Chile and the principles of freedom and democracy throughout Latin America. Today, I bid farewell to not just a friend but a remarkable leader."

Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon
"I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of my friend Sebastian Pinera. His family has lost an exemplary husband and father, and Chile has lost one of its finest presidents."

Former Paraguayan President Mario Abdo
"In times of difficulty, Pinera consistently supported Paraguay and the region as a whole. Just yesterday, we were in a video call with several former presidents. We are deeply shocked by this tragic news. My heartfelt solidarity goes to the entire Pinera family and the Chilean people."

Former Colombian President Ivan Duque
"I am heartbroken by the passing of my dear friend and colleague Sebastian Pinera. He was a unique leader, a person of integrity, and a true supporter of Colombia. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner
"While we had differing views, our relationship was characterized by respect. He was a right-wing man but profoundly democratic. I will always remember his humor and the warmth of his family, who I had the pleasure to meet in Chile. My deepest condolences to them."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez
"My condolences to his family and friends, as well as to the government and the people of Chile. During his presidency, we strengthened the ties between our countries, and together we enabled COP 25 at a crucial moment in the battle against the climate emergency. Rest in peace."
