Russia: U.S. Withdrawal from Nuclear Pact Would Not Signal New Cold War

Moscow (Reuters) – According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the complete withdrawal of the United States from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty will not mark the onset of a new Cold War. Lavrov stated, “I don’t think we’re talking about the development of a Cold War. A new era has begun.”

This follows Russia’s suspension of the Cold War-era nuclear arms treaty after the United States announced its intention to withdraw, citing violations by Moscow.

The U.S. has indicated its plans to fully exit the INF Treaty within six months unless Russia addresses what Washington deems violations of the 1987 agreement.
