Russian Prosecutor Seeks Nine-Year Sentence for U.S. Ex-Marine Gilman, According to RIA Reports by Reuters
A Russian prosecutor has requested a prison sentence of nine years and one month for Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine already serving time for attacking a police officer while intoxicated, according to a report by the state-run RIA news agency.
The court is set to deliver its verdict on October 7.
In October 2022, Gilman received a sentence of 4-1/2 years in a Russian penal colony for his assault on the officer, which was subsequently reduced to 3-1/2 years.
His current trial, taking place in Voronezh—approximately 465 km south of Moscow—concerns separate allegations of assaulting a prison official and a state investigator.
Gilman, who has stated through his lawyers that he came to Russia to study and seek citizenship, reportedly pleaded guilty to all charges. During the court proceedings, he claimed he was compelled to use violence after a prison inspector inflicted pain on him and an investigator made derogatory remarks about his father.
Gilman is among at least 10 U.S. nationals currently imprisoned in Russia, following a prisoner swap that occurred on August 1, which saw 24 individuals freed, including three Americans.
Meanwhile, a separate case involving Stephen Hubbard, a 72-year-old American accused by Russia of serving as a mercenary for Ukraine, is set to reach a verdict on Monday.
