
School Bus Catches Fire in Thailand, 25 Feared Dead – Reuters
BANGKOK (Reuters) – Approximately 25 people are feared dead in Thailand as a school bus, transporting students and teachers on a field trip, caught fire on the outskirts of Bangkok. Additionally, 16 passengers have been hospitalized, according to government reports.
While police have not officially confirmed the casualty figures, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated to reporters that around 25 fatalities are suspected, though he did not provide further details.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit stated that 16 students and three teachers were hospitalized for treatment, noting that the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
Early images shared on social media and utilized by local news sources displayed thick gray smoke billowing from the bus, which continued to burn in parts.
The fire has since been extinguished. A photographer observed fire trucks, police, and rescue vehicles surrounding the damaged bus, with a group of firefighters positioned at the scene.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra revealed that the students were on a field trip from Uthai Thani province, located approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of the capital.
"Like any mother, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families affected," she expressed in a social media statement.
