Canada’s Unifor Union Approves Two-Year Contract with General Motors – Reuters
Unifor members working at the CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly plants in Ontario have approved a two-year contract with General Motors, resulting in substantial pay increases, the Canadian labor union announced on Sunday.
Members of Unifor Local 88 voted overwhelmingly, with 95.7% in favor of the agreement. Under the new contract, workers will receive an immediate pay rise of 10%, followed by a 2% increase in September 2025 and an additional 3% increase in July 2026.
The contract also stipulates a 20.25% wage increase for skilled trades, according to the union’s statement. This new agreement will be effective until September 20, 2026.
Unifor National President Lana Payne noted that this is the first time the union has successfully negotiated a two-year contract term that aligns CAMI members with the union’s negotiations involving General Motors in Detroit. This alignment aims to strengthen the bargaining power of over 5,600 GM members.
Unifor Local 88 represents more than 1,300 workers at the CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly plants, which produce the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400, as well as Ultium battery modules. General Motors has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the contract.
