Spanish Police Seize 8 Tonnes of Cocaine Hidden in Fake Power Generator

MADRID (Reuters) – Spanish authorities have confiscated eight tonnes of cocaine hidden in a container disguised as a power generator at the southern port of Algeciras, according to tax officials on Monday.

This seizure is among the largest amounts of cocaine ever intercepted in Spain, with the drugs concealed within a metal structure specifically designed to evade detection by scanners. However, customs agents noticed a substantial quantity of stacked merchandise that nearly filled the container, prompting them to force it open.

The smugglers had devised a route aimed at complicating the discovery of the cargo’s actual contents. The drugs made their journey from Suriname to Panama before arriving in Algeciras, with their planned next stop being Leixoes in Portugal, from where they were to be transported by road back to Spain.

As part of the operation, three individuals have been arrested, as confirmed by customs officials.
