United Steelworkers Union Appoints David McCall as President, Reports Reuters

The United Steelworkers executive board has appointed David McCall as the new leader of the 850,000-member union, the largest in North America, according to a spokesperson.

McCall will take on the role for the remainder of Tom Conway’s term following Conway’s passing this week after an illness. The union represents workers across various sectors, including steel, mining, public health, education, and the oil industry in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Expressing his commitment, McCall stated, “Our union is strong, thanks in large part to Tom’s leadership and vision. Together, we’ll honor Tom’s legacy as we fight for justice and fairness for working families.”

Having served as vice president for administration since 2019, McCall worked alongside Conway, who became the union’s international president that same year. Both individuals started their careers at the Bethlehem Steel mill in Burns Harbor, Indiana.

McCall will serve as the union’s ninth president until February 2026, with the next presidential election scheduled for the fall of 2025. He has been actively involved in leading the USW’s master contract negotiations with several companies, including Cleveland-Cliffs, ATI, and Goodyear, as well as various industry-wide bargaining committees.
