U.S. to Discuss War Strategy with Zelenskiy and Prepare Support Package This Month, Reports Reuters

KYIV – U.S. President Joe Biden is anticipating discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy regarding Ukraine’s war strategy later this month. The White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, announced that Washington is preparing a “substantial” new aid package.

Zelenskiy is expected to present a “victory plan,” aimed at compelling Russia to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, during his meeting with Biden and his two potential successors.

Sullivan expressed the importance of having a comprehensive strategy for success in the conflict, emphasizing that President Zelenskiy will bring this approach to the discussion. He highlighted Biden’s eagerness to engage in this conversation.

Sullivan spoke via video link at the Yalta European Strategy conference held in Kyiv, organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. He mentioned that the U.S. is working on a significant support package, incorporating various capabilities, with the goal of finalizing it by the end of the month. This effort is part of the U.S. strategy to avert a major Russian advance in eastern Ukraine.

Currently, Russian forces are making gains in certain eastern regions, including around Pokrovsk, which Sullivan cited as a concern. The capture of this transport hub could provide Moscow with new avenues for attack and further complicate Ukrainian logistics.

As Russia has intensified its missile strikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure this year, Ukraine has been appealing for long-range weapons that would facilitate strikes deeper into Russian territory. Sullivan noted that this issue is under “intense consultations” among allies and partners, and it will also be discussed in the upcoming meeting between Biden and Zelenskiy.
