UK Police to Investigate Additional Individuals in Ex-Harrods Boss Assault Allegations, Reports Reuters

British Police Urge Victims of Mohamed Al Fayed to Come Forward

LONDON – British police have called for individuals with allegations against the late billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed to come forward, following multiple accusations of sexual abuse and rape made by several women.

A recent documentary highlighted claims that Al Fayed had engaged in sexual misconduct with female staff at his iconic London department store, Harrods, during his ownership from 1985 until 2010. It also alleged that he threatened employees who attempted to raise complaints and that the company failed to address these allegations, contributing to a culture of silence.

Despite Al Fayed’s passing at the age of 94 last year, the Metropolitan Police in London has expressed its intention to investigate whether other individuals involved could face prosecution for criminal offenses related to these claims.

Stephen Clayman, head of specialist crime at the Metropolitan Police, emphasized the importance of giving victims a platform to voice their experiences. He stated, "It is vital that any victims have a voice and are able to report any allegations if they have not done so before, and know that they will be taken seriously." The police have set up specialist teams to support victims who come forward.

Attorneys representing women who have accused Al Fayed of sexual assault and rape report receiving over 150 new inquiries from potential victims since the documentary aired.

Harrods, sold by Al Fayed to a Qatari investment group in 2010, expressed its shock at the allegations, stating it was "utterly appalled."

Accusations against Al Fayed have surfaced in various media outlets over the years, including notable reports from 1995, 1997, and 2017. Many women felt empowered to share their stories publicly only after his death.

In 2009, prosecutors opted not to charge Al Fayed concerning a claim of sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl in his store, citing a lack of a realistic chance of conviction. Throughout his life, Al Fayed continually denied all allegations made against him.
