UK Shopper Numbers Impacted by Rail Strikes and Snow
LONDON – Shopper numbers across Britain declined by 4.6% last week compared to the previous week, according to market researcher Springboard. This drop was attributed to rail strikes and cold, snowy weather, which further impacted the country’s retailers.
In the week leading up to December 17, a crucial period for Christmas shopping, footfall was down 0.9% from the same time last year and 20.1% lower than in 2019. High streets faced the largest challenges, seeing a significant week-on-week decrease of 10.2%.
With UK inflation at 10.7% and consumer confidence near record lows, there are growing concerns about a subdued Christmas season. Multiple surveys indicate that many consumers plan to reduce their holiday shopping this year.
Several British retailers, including Marks & Spencer and Primark, have expressed caution regarding their outlook in recent months, reflecting the financial strain many households are experiencing due to the rising cost of living.
Additionally, official data released on Friday revealed an unexpected decline in retail sales for November, despite promotions related to the men’s soccer World Cup and Black Friday sales.
