UK Unprepared for Brexit and Requires More Time, but Not Indefinitely: Sapin According to Reuters
CHENGDU, China – French Finance Minister Michel Sapin has stated that Britain was not adequately prepared for the aftermath of the referendum to leave the European Union and should be given some time to formulate its response. However, he emphasized that this timeframe should not extend too long due to the detrimental uncertainty it creates.
On June 23, Britain voted to exit the 28-nation EU, but has yet to submit formal notice—marking the beginning of a two-year negotiation period for the terms of its departure.
European officials have urged Britain to initiate this process without delay, arguing that the current indecision is contributing to uncertainty that hampers economic growth.
Sapin acknowledged that given the unexpected nature of the vote and lack of preparation on the part of British authorities, it is reasonable for Britain to take some time to organize and consider its response.
However, he cautioned that this period of reflection should not be open-ended. "Uncertainty is damaging, particularly for Great Britain, so it is essential to engage in negotiations as soon as possible. The discussions cannot be fragmented," Sapin remarked.
