US Urges Senegalese President Sall to Restore Electoral Calendar

U.S. Secretary of State Calls for Senegal to Restore Electoral Timeline

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Senegalese President Macky Sall to reinstate the nation’s electoral calendar and the timeline for presidential transition. This request followed a telephone conversation between the two leaders, as reported by the U.S. State Department.

During the call, Blinken expressed "serious concerns" regarding the political situation in Senegal, particularly in light of recent actions to delay the presidential election.

The decision to postpone the vote originally scheduled for February 25 to December has created a crisis in Senegal and sparked significant backlash. Many view this move as an attempt to extend Sall’s mandate, raising alarm about the stability of one of the few remaining democracies in a region affected by coups.
