Venezuela Accuses Detained Activist of Involvement in Conspiracy Plot
CARACAS (Reuters) – On Sunday, Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek Saab announced the arrest of lawyer and human rights activist Rocio San Miguel for her alleged participation in a conspiracy plot and attempted assassination of President Nicolás Maduro.
San Miguel, a specialist in security, defense, and human rights, serves as the president of Control Ciudadano, a non-governmental organization focused on promoting civilian oversight of the Venezuelan armed forces.
According to information from human rights organization Amnesty International, she was detained at the international airport near Caracas. Saab stated on social media that the arrest was made under a warrant linked to her alleged involvement in the conspiracy, which purportedly targeted the life of President Maduro and other high-ranking officials.
As of now, Reuters has been unable to obtain comments from her legal representatives.
Amnesty International and various other human rights organizations have condemned the arrest. The organization called for San Miguel’s immediate and unconditional release.
