Thailand’s Same-Sex Marriage Bill Receives Royal Endorsement, According to Reuters
BANGKOK (Reuters) – Thailand’s King has given royal approval to a marriage equality bill that was passed by parliament earlier this year. This landmark decision makes Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia to formally recognize marriages between same-sex couples.
The official royal endorsement was published in the royal gazette on Tuesday, indicating that the law will take effect in 120 days, specifically on January 22, 2025.
This legislation represents the culmination of two decades of advocacy by activists dedicated to promoting equal rights. The bill received Senate approval in June.
Thailand is widely recognized as one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, celebrated for its vibrant LGBT culture and generally tolerant society.
