Port Workers in Los Angeles Prepare for Contract Negotiations
Los Angeles – The union representing approximately 22,000 port workers on the West Coast is set to begin new contract negotiations with employers on Tuesday, as announced by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Dispatcher newspaper.
The current agreement between the ILWU and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents employers, is set to expire on July 1. It applies to workers at 29 ports across California, Oregon, and Washington. A significant number of these workers are stationed at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach, the busiest seaport complex in the United States, which is currently managing backlogs resulting from a surge in imports linked to the pandemic.
