PHILADELPHIA – Known as the birthplace of U.S. independence and the "City of Brotherly Love," Philadelphia is once again set to become the center of attention as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump prepare to engage in a highly anticipated televised debate that could have significant implications for the upcoming November election.

The two candidates, who have never met face-to-face, will confront each other at 9 p.m. ET for a 90-minute debate hosted by ABC News.

Law enforcement is preparing for possible protests, particularly from pro-Palestinian groups who are upset with Harris’ ongoing support of Israel. Barricades have been set up around the National Constitution Center, the debate location, limiting access to the historic area that houses landmarks such as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the U.S. Constitution was signed.

Meanwhile, various bars and universities across the city are planning to hold watch parties. Notably, top Democrats are expected to convene at a hotel for a watch party that Harris is likely to attend after the debate concludes. Details regarding Trump’s post-debate plans remain undisclosed.

On Monday, a plane flew over a Philadelphia Phillies game displaying a message that urged support for Harris, playfully referencing Trump’s baseball-related imagery.

Some residents of Philadelphia expressed a desire to learn more about Harris during the debate. One local, Dan Bessler, noted, “I wasn’t, like, super impressed with her in 2020 during the presidential debates, but she is a prosecutor… I think she’ll be able to hold her own better than Biden did at his age.”

Biden’s lackluster debate performance against Trump in June was seen as a turning point in his political career, encouraging influential Democrats to suggest he allow Harris to lead the ticket instead. Since that moment, Harris has achieved record fundraising results and reignited enthusiasm within the party, even as polls indicate a competitive race with Trump.

Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, emerges as a crucial battleground that could determine the election’s outcome. Analysts agree that the candidate who secures Pennsylvania is likely to win the White House.

Historically, Democrats find success in Pennsylvania by achieving strong margins in Philadelphia to counterbalance losses in other areas of the state. In the 2020 election, the city recorded its highest voter turnout since 1984 at 68 percent, though it still fell short of the statewide turnout of 76.5 percent.
