Zimbabwe Vice President Returns to South Africa for Treatment, According to Newspaper Report by Reuters

HARARE (Reuters) – Zimbabwe’s Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is currently undergoing medical treatment in South Africa after falling ill last week. This marks the second time in four months that Chiwenga, 62, has sought treatment outside the country. His health is of significant interest in Zimbabwe, as he is viewed as a key figure behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa and a likely successor. Chiwenga, a former military general, played a crucial role in the coup that removed long-time leader Robert Mugabe from power in 2017.

Recently, Mnangagwa addressed rumors of a rift with Chiwenga that have surfaced following his commitment to address a severe security crackdown on protests that occurred last month while he was away.

According to reports, Chiwenga initially checked into a private hospital in Zimbabwe before being transferred to Cape Town for further treatment. Specific details regarding his medical condition have not been disclosed.

George Charamba, the presidential spokesperson, stated that he was unable to provide immediate comments on Chiwenga’s situation. Last October, Charamba mentioned that Chiwenga had traveled to South Africa for treatment related to injuries from a bombing incident during a campaign rally ahead of the elections.

In recent months, Chiwenga has been seen with visibly swollen hands and discolored skin patches, raising concerns about his health.
