Zimbabwe’s Public Sector Union Withdraws Strike Amid Volatile Situation, Reports Reuters

HARARE (Reuters) – The main public sector union in Zimbabwe has decided to abandon its plans for a nationwide strike, according to an official statement released on Thursday. This decision comes in light of the current unstable situation following violent protests earlier this month, which were met with a severe crackdown from security forces.

Negotiations between the government and the Apex Council, which represents 17 public sector unions, collapsed on Wednesday. The unions initially intended to convene and set a date for a strike, but the discussions ultimately ended without agreement.

Cecilia Alexander, chairwoman of the Apex Council, expressed concern about the prevailing conditions. She noted, "Apex feels that it’s not conducive to take action. The situation is volatile and polarized, and any actions we take might be misappropriated for issues unrelated to labor."
