Foxconn to Utilize Nvidia Chips for Developing Self-Driving Vehicle Platforms, Reports Reuters

Chipmaker Nvidia and electronics manufacturer Foxconn have announced a partnership to create autonomous vehicle platforms. Foxconn, based in Taiwan, will produce electronic control units (ECUs) for automobiles utilizing Nvidia’s DRIVE Orin chip, designed specifically for the needs of connected and autonomous vehicles.

According to Foxconn, these ECUs will cater to the global automotive market. Companies in the electric and autonomous vehicle space have faced challenges in bringing their products to market due to increasing costs and production difficulties. Nvidia believes its advanced technology, which includes chips capable of processing sensor data in real-time, will assist Foxconn in addressing these problems.

Nvidia identifies a significant market opportunity worth $300 billion in the automotive sector, reporting $251 million in revenue from this segment in the third quarter. The collaboration aims to enhance Nvidia’s ability to meet the surging demand for chips tailored for autonomous and connected vehicles.

Foxconn, which operates a vehicle manufacturing facility in Ohio, will integrate the DRIVE Orin ECUs and Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion sensors into its vehicles for autonomous driving capabilities.

In addition to its work with Nvidia, Foxconn manufactures electric vehicles for Lordstown Motors and has a contract for Fisker’s second model, PEAR. The company has expressed ambitions to eventually produce vehicles for Tesla as it expands its electric vehicle manufacturing in an effort to diversify its business.
