PJM Issues Geomagnetic Disturbance Warning, Flags Limited Risk to Grid – Reuters
PJM Interconnection, the largest electricity grid operator in the United States, issued a warning on Thursday regarding a potential geomagnetic disturbance that could affect its system until 2 a.m. Eastern Time on October 11.
Geomagnetic disturbances, which result from solar activity, are uncommon but have the potential to disrupt power grids. PJM noted that while it is monitoring the situation, it does not anticipate any significant impacts or emergencies arising from these disturbances. The organization is actively collaborating with generation and transmission operators, as well as neighboring grid managers.
The warning was initiated at 11:41 a.m. ET on Thursday, following a notification from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, based on information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
